In China, a tragic incident unfolded when an eight-year-old boy, who had recently joined the Chongde Juying Martial Arts Sports Club in Qingdao, Shandong, was reportedly subjected to severe physical abuse by his martial arts instructor.
The boy's name has not been disclosed.
The young boy's parents had enrolled him in the club on June 17, 2023, paying a fee of 7,680 yuan (approximately £837) for a year's worth of self-defense lessons.
However, just a day later, on June 18, they received a distressing video showing their son during training, appearing unusually pale and covered in bruises, particularly on his legs.
Deeply concerned about their son's condition, the parents rushed him to the Third People's Hospital in Chenyang.
Tragically, upon arrival, he was pronounced dead, allegedly as a result of the beatings inflicted by his instructor.
Medical records obtained by China's daily publication, The Paper, revealed that the boy's heart had stopped beating 20 minutes prior to his arrival at the hospital.
Following the incident, three individuals associated with the martial arts club, including the couple in charge and a coach, were arrested by the Chenyang branch of Qingdao's Public Security Bureau.
Ongoing investigations are being conducted, and the club is currently not operational.
A video, which circulated and was witnessed by The Straits Times, depicted the young boy wearing an orange T-shirt bearing the club's name on the back.
In the footage, he collapsed to the ground, while a woman's voice can be heard issuing a warning, "If you keep doing this, your mum has told me she will not pick you up for one year."
The boy's father, Mr. Zhai, received a video of his son around 11 a.m. on June 18, where he noticed the boy's unusually pale appearance.
The mother expressed her dissatisfaction with the coaches, criticizing their failure to promptly seek medical attention for her son.
