A tight-knit community is immersed in grief following a devastating hit-and-run incident in Minneapolis which claimed the lives of three women and two girls described as "bright stars." Sabiriin Ali, Sahra Gesaade, Salma Abdikadir, Sagal Hersi, and Siham Adam, aged between 17 and 20, were named as the victims by their local mosque.
"These individuals had promising futures," shared Khalid Omar, Mosque Director at Dar Al Farooq Center, in an interview with CBS News. "We're talking about the pearls. We're talking about the bright stars of our community."
The incident unfolded in an unprecedented manner, leaving the community shaken. The vehicle that struck the women's car was observed speeding at approximately 95mph and running a red light around 10:35 PM on Friday night, according to the MailOnline.
Minneapolis City Council Member Jamal Osman, who received information about the crash, expressed his sorrow. He informed the Minneapolis Star Tribune that the impact of the collision was forceful enough to propel the victims' car 50 feet. "It's heartbreaking. These girls had a lot of life ahead of them," he shared.
Although a police officer reportedly spotted the driver, they were unable to apprehend him before the fatal crash occurred. Moments before the accident, some of the women had been speaking with their mothers on the phone.
Following the incident, the driver fled the scene on foot and was eventually apprehended by authorities at a nearby Taco Bell. The driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the crash and was subjected to drug and alcohol testing. At present, the suspect has not been officially identified by the police.
In the aftermath of this tragic event, the community has rallied together to support the grieving families. A fundraiser established for the victims' families has garnered nearly £300,000, with funerals scheduled to take place on Monday.
"These young Muslim sisters were beacons of hope for our future. Unfortunately, their lives were abruptly cut short last night by a driver evading the police," states the fundraising page, highlighting the devastating impact of the incident.
