A female tourist visiting Bangkok airport suffered a devastating accident that led to the amputation of her leg.
The incident occurred in Terminal 2 of Don Mueang Airport as the 57-year-old Thai passenger was preparing to board a flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat province.
Tragically, she tripped over her pink suitcase and her left leg became entangled in the moving walkway.
Witnesses were horrified as they rushed to turn off the emergency switch, but the walkway continued to damage her leg, tearing through the muscle, tendon, and bone.
Airport officials reported that a medical team had to amputate her leg above the knee.
She was promptly transported to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital in Bangkok for urgent medical treatment.
The Victim
Upon arrival at Karun Hospital, she was informed that her leg could not be reattached.
However, the patient requested to be transferred to another hospital for further evaluation.
The airport authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
They noted that the woman's suitcase was missing two wheels and the protective plates at the end of the walkway were broken.
The Victims Damaged Suitcase
As a precautionary measure, the travelator automatic walkway has been temporarily closed while an engineering team conducts inspections and security checks.
The director of Don Mueang Airport and management personally visited the patient to monitor her treatment progress.
The airport expressed deep sadness over the incident and pledged full responsibility, including covering medical expenses and providing compensation. Fortunately, no flights were affected by the accident.
Don Mueang International Airport, which opened in 1914, served as Bangkok's primary airport until the inauguration of Suvarnabhumi International Airport in 2006.
The walkway involved in the accident was manufactured by Hitachi, a Japanese company, and was installed in 1996.
The airport director mentioned plans to seek a budget in 2025 for replacing it with a newer model.
In a previous incident at Terminal 1 in 2019, a passenger's shoe was damaged when caught in the moving walkway, but it was quickly repaired.
Unfortunately, this distressing event occurred shortly after a separate tragedy at San Antonio International Airport, where an airport worker lost their life after being sucked into an aircraft engine on the tarmac.
