According to a statement by SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the spokesperson for the police command, the incident occurred when the suspect, Hamza Umar, poured kerosene on the victim, Hafsat Bala, and set her ablaze. Umar claimed that the girl had entered his compound, asserting that she was sent by her elder sister to kill him.
The suspect further alleged that the girl had mentioned burying charms in the corner of his house and refused to remove them when he requested. Acting on credible intelligence, the police operatives attached to the command arrested Hamza Umar for causing grievous harm and attempting to commit culpable homicide.
As described in the statement, Hamza Umar explained that Hafsat Bala had invaded his residence in the Rafin Albasa area of Bauchi and walked around the premises. He asked her why she was in his compound, to which she responded that her eldest sister sent her to kill him.
Despite the suspect's efforts to send her away, the victim insisted that she had buried charms in the corner of the house. When she refused to remove them, the suspect became enraged, doused her in kerosene, and set her on fire, accusing her of being a witch.
Upon receiving the information, a team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) swiftly responded to the scene. They immediately evacuated the victim, Hafsat Bala, to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for urgent medical attention.
Meanwhile, a discreet investigation has been launched to uncover the precise circumstances that led to the incident. The suspect will face charges in court once the investigation is completed.
The police command issued a stern warning, emphasizing that no one has the right to subject another human being to such a barbaric act. It is unacceptable for anyone to take on the role of a law enforcement agency. Instead, individuals should hand over minors or report incidents to the police or relevant authorities responsible for conducting investigations.
