A former New York City teacher has been arrested by federal authorities for her alleged sexual abuse of a mentally ill underage student.
Sandy Carazas-Pinez, 34, is accused of enticing the 16-year-old boy, who attended a special needs school in Yonkers, into a sexual relationship.
Prosecutors claim that Carazas-Pinez groomed the student between November 2022 and February of this year, engaging in sexual encounters and convincing him to appear on explicit livestreams during video calls.
The indictment further alleges that Carazas-Pinez sexted with the student and instructed him to delete the messages and images. She also orchestrated off-campus meetings, often driving to various locations to engage in sexual activities.
The illicit relationship came to light when school officials discovered her off-campus association with the student and dismissed her from her teaching position.
Carazas-Pinez now faces charges of enticing a minor for illegal sexual activity and production of child pornography, with potential penalties of 10 years to life in prison if convicted.
The victim's mother expressed relief over the arrest, emphasizing the need to prioritize the safety of mentally ill children and male victims of sexual assault.
The parents also criticized the perceived delay in law enforcement action. Carazas-Pinez's defense attorney commented that the case is still in its early stages.
