Gunman Opens Fire at Moldova's Main Airport After Stealing A Cop's Gun, Leaving Two Security Officers Dead.

Two security officers lost their lives when a man opened fire at Moldova's main international airport.

The incident occurred after a 43-year-old Tajikistan national, who was denied entry into the country from Turkey, seized a gun from a border police official at Chisinau International Airport, according to Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

President Maia Sandu expressed her condolences to the grieving families, acknowledging the pain caused by the loss of loved ones.

The incident left a civilian injured, along with the apprehended gunman, who was taken into custody by the police.

As a precautionary measure, all passengers were evacuated from the airport and flights were temporarily halted.

The country's top prosecutor, Ion Munteanu, stated that the incident is being investigated as a potential terrorist attack.

A witness, Olena Shevelyova, reported hearing multiple gunshots and described the authorities instructing people to seek shelter behind nearby buildings.

Shevelyova, a 48-year-old Ukrainian executive who was waiting for a flight to Milan, mentioned the arrival of ambulances near the airport.

Initially, it was unclear whether the situation was a bomb threat, but it soon became clear that there was only an active shooter.

Moldova, with a population of approximately 2.6 million people and aspiring to join the European Union, has faced various crises, including an energy shortage due to reduced gas supplies from Russia and recurring anti-government protests organized by a Kremlin-friendly political party.

The country's leaders have repeatedly accused Moscow of attempting to destabilize Moldova, which was formerly a Soviet republic until 1991.
