A 19-year-old woman from Texas was apprehended after a distressing incident in which she mistakenly shot her 50-year-old mother in the head with a loaded firearm.
Crystal Lissette Mar was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon against a family or household member.
Authorities responded to a 911 call at a residence on Hibiscus Lane in Laredo, Texas. The caller, Mar's mother, informed the emergency services that her daughter had shot her in the head. Medical personnel arrived at the scene and provided immediate care to the injured mother, who remained conscious and communicative. She was later transported to a nearby medical center for further treatment.
During the investigation, the mother recounted the events leading up to the shooting.
Mar had arrived at the house around 3 a.m. and requested to borrow her mother's phone, explaining that she had left hers in a friend's car and needed to send a text message.
It was during this interaction that the mother noticed Mar carrying what appeared to be a handgun in her purse.
Concerned, she insisted that the weapon not be kept in the house and demanded that Mar remove the bullets and dispose of the firearm.
According to the mother's statement, Mar struggled to remove the magazine from the gun.
Eventually, she successfully detached the magazine but accidentally discharged a round, resulting in her mother being shot in the head.
Mar's mother immediately contacted emergency services to report the accidental shooting.
Mar allegedly fled the scene before the authorities arrived, but she was apprehended by the Laredo Police Department just two blocks away.
Upon her arrest, the police recovered a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun from Mar, who still had the magazine in her hand.
During her interview with investigators, Mar admitted to her lack of familiarity with handguns.
She explained that she removed the magazine to demonstrate to her mother that the gun was unloaded. In a moment of carelessness, Mar inadvertently pressed the trigger, causing the firearm to discharge and injure her mother.
Mar is currently held at Laredo County Jail with a bond set at $30,000.
