Chandler Jones found himself in Las Vegas police custody on Thursday night, just a day after his peculiar social media outbursts and erratic behavior. The star defensive end for the Las Vegas Raiders faced two charges of violating a domestic violence protective order as he was booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
On Thursday, the Super Bowl champion took to social media in a livestream, shedding tears and making unfounded allegations, notably implicating Raiders coach Josh McDaniels (formerly the Patriots offensive coordinator) in the death of Jones' former New England teammate, Aaron Hernandez.
Hernandez tragically took his own life in prison on April 19, 2017.
These accusations followed Jones' tweet claiming he was forcibly admitted to a mental hospital and administered unwanted medication.
As of Friday afternoon, Jones remained in police custody, with a bond set at $15,000. However, he was expected to be released later in the day. The 33-year-old athlete is scheduled for a court appearance on December 4 regarding this incident.
The Raiders issued a statement expressing their hope that Chandler Jones receives the necessary care, emphasizing that he, his family, and all involved parties are in their thoughts. Since this matter has legal implications, they refrained from offering further comments.
During his Friday press conference, Coach McDaniels chose not to comment further on Jones, citing that he was not fully informed about the situation. He assured that nothing had changed on the coaching staff's side and expressed his care for all players, past and present.
The livestream from Thursday appeared to be filmed outside Jones' Las Vegas residence. He affirmed his mental stability and expressed a desire to play for the Raiders. Additionally, Jones made statements concerning his former Cardinals teammate, Larry Fitzgerald, in the 25-minute video.
He questioned the influence of team owners on players like Larry Fitzgerald, Tom Brady, and Kobe Bryant after their retirements, suggesting that something unusual happens to them.
Jones also claimed that players were being injected with fluoride and denied the existence of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy).
Earlier this month, Jones had voiced complaints about not gaining access to the Raiders' gym. Despite his impressive NFL career, which includes two All-Pro and four Pro Bowl selections in 11 seasons, he has not played a game in the current season. He is the younger brother of UFC star Jon Jones.
A man was found guilty by a jury on Thursday in connection with a series of crimes, including the attempted murder of two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies outside a transit station in September 2020, according to prosecutors. See detailed story here
