Mitchell Dang, a vibrant and joyful young woman, shared a video on FOX 5 News where she talked about her plans to go downtown in Atlanta for a night of dancing. This video was recorded on August 26.
Sadly, just four days later, her lifeless body was discovered in a parking deck across from the Fulton County Courthouse.
According to Atlanta Police, Mitchell, a resident of Norcross, was tragically kidnapped, had her cellphone stolen, and was brutally murdered by a complete stranger. Her family, deeply affected by this devastating loss, expressed their emotions, feeling a profound emptiness, sadness, and shock.
Mary Dang, Mitchell's sister, held the hands of their mother and another sister, Maggie, as she shared the heart-wrenching experience.
Mitchell, who was 25 years old at the time, had asked her mom for permission to go dancing with friends at Alley Cat Atlanta, a music venue. However, the exact details of what transpired that night in downtown Atlanta are still under investigation.
Mary explained, "However it happened, it happened... we don't know. [Police tell us] that she went to a music venue and on her way back to the car she was attacked by a stranger that they arrested on Friday, the 22nd."
In honor of Mitchell, the family has created a shrine that will be displayed for 49 days, in accordance with their Buddhist beliefs, as her spirit prepares for its final resting place.
Mary shared that their parents came to the United States from Vietnam after the war, and although they didn't have much, they always had each other.
Police have charged Ja’ Keivious Arnold with murder, kidnapping, and robbery in connection to Mitchell's tragic death.
He is currently held in the Fulton County Jail without bond.
In another development in Illinois, a man named Kewan Tillman, who is 20 years old, received a 10-year sentence in federal prison on Wednesday for a carjacking incident. See detailed story here
