High School Band Chaos: Director Tased Amidst Energetic Post-Football Game Performance

In Birmingham, a rather shocking incident unfolded after a high school football game. 

    It wasn't a touchdown or a winning field goal that took center stage, but the actions of Johnny Mims, a band director at the heart of it all. As the cheers and excitement continued well after the final whistle, Birmingham police had to step in to restore order.

    The dust-up occurred following the football game between Minor High School and P.D. Jackson-Olin High School, during a customary post-game music session known as the "fifth quarter." 

    In footage captured by body cameras worn by Birmingham police officers, it's clear that the band's performance had extended 18 minutes past the game's end.

    With the band still energetically playing and the crowd cheering, police officers approached the scene, urging the band to wrap up their act. "It's time to go," one officer told a band instructor, but the band remained undeterred.

    Their attention then turned to Johnny Mims, who adamantly resisted the officers' requests, repeatedly telling them to back off. 

    A female officer even warned Mims, "Load them up before I contact the superintendent." Despite the pleas, Mims continued to conduct the band enthusiastically.

    Chaos erupted when the field lights were suddenly switched off, causing students to scream in surprise. Only then did the band finally stop playing, and that's when police attempted to arrest Mims. An officer accused the band director of swinging at another officer, a claim Mims vehemently denied.

    Following orders to place his hands behind his back, an officer deployed a Taser on Mims for several seconds. After the shocking experience, Mims cooperated, allowing the officers to handcuff him.

    The Birmingham Police Department is currently investigating this incident, and as of now, no further details have been released by the authorities.
