Peter Reiss doesn't consider serial killer Joel Rifkin a friend, but they've certainly developed a connection over time.
This unique relationship has paved the way for the upcoming A&E special, "Cold Case Files: The Rifkin Murders," where authorities strive to uncover the identities of two of Rifkin's unnamed victims.
Rifkin, a former landscaper, is believed to have committed 17 murders of women in New York during the 1990s. He is currently serving a sentence of over 200 years in prison, convicted in 1994 for the murder of nine women.
Reiss, one of the producers behind the special, recounted how he first encountered Rifkin in 1998. He initially reached out to him for a science documentary exploring the potential biological factors behind killings.
"I was intrigued by Rifkin because he didn't seem to fit the typical profile associated with serial killers," Reiss explained. "He came from a loving family, had supportive parents, a good relationship with his sister, attended good schools, and had all the elements for a successful life. Yet, he still ended up as a serial killer."
Rifkin expressed interest in participating in the documentary, which led to years of ongoing conversations between the two men.
In another development, Washington DC has been grappling with a surge in crime. In 2021, it reached a nearly two-decade high with 226 homicides, and while the numbers dropped in 2022, they still exceeded 200 murders. See detailed story here
