In a dramatic turn of events, a convicted child sex offender managed to escape from a hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, sparking a massive manhunt.
Tommy Wayne Boyd, serving a 30-year prison sentence for a 2007 felony enticement of a child case and a 1996 conviction for sodomizing an 11-year-old boy, slipped away from Mercy Hospital South, where he was receiving treatment after being transported from the Potosi Correctional Facility.
Authorities swung into action, launching an extensive search for the 45-year-old escapee, involving federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. After about 16 hours on the run, they managed to apprehend Boyd without any confrontation or resistance, according to a statement from St. Louis County Police.
What makes this escape particularly intriguing are the curious stops Boyd made during his brief taste of freedom. As over a hundred officers scoured the area in pursuit, Boyd made some unconventional choices, including applying for a job and indulging in a free hotdog.
St. Louis County's Lieutenant Colonel, Jason Law, shared, "We're still trying to piece together the exact timeline of events. He did some unusual things along the way. What we're attempting to confirm is whether there's any evidence, either from surveillance cameras or eyewitnesses, that could shed light on how he managed to emerge from the sewer."
Reportedly, Boyd stole a handcuff key from one of the two guards responsible for his watch at Mercy Hospital South early that morning, as revealed in a report by KSDK, citing sources. He then hitched a ride from a stranger at a gas station located across the street from the hospital.
Hours later, the police came across a selfie of Boyd with an unidentified woman on social media. "We did identify her," said Mr. Law, "but at the moment, we're uncertain about the nature of their relationship."
In a surprising turn of events, Boyd attended a voter registration event at Tower Grove Park in the afternoon. He answered a couple of political questions and enjoyed a free hotdog, adding another perplexing chapter to his escapade.
The police expressed gratitude to the community for providing numerous tips that played a crucial role in Boyd's swift recapture. Their statement emphasized that the residents are now safer with Boyd back in custody.
Another tragic incident has left a community mourning the loss of a beloved woman. Carrie Slater, a 37-year-old resident of Long Clawson, was shot on Thursday and succumbed to her injuries two days later. See detailed story here
