Shocking Crime Unveiled: Man Accused of Hammer Attack on Girlfriend After Drug-Fueled Night

In a shocking incident, a 54-year-old man with a history of trouble finds himself in hot water. He is accused of brutally attacking his live-in girlfriend in their Massachusetts residence, using a hammer as his weapon.

This horrific event occurred after a night of partying, involving drugs and alcohol. The accused, Matthew Lucas, was eventually apprehended by the police, hiding out in a nearby shed. The victim, Heidi Chace, aged 44, tragically lost her life in this gruesome act.

Matthew Lucas entered a plea of not guilty during his court appearance in Fall River District Court. The court decided to keep him in custody without bail as the legal proceedings continue.

The accused's daughter expressed her disbelief outside the courtroom, stating that she was aware of her father's issues but never imagined he would take someone's life.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III commented on the case, emphasizing the brutality of the killing and highlighting the defendant's extensive criminal history. The tragic incident unfolded early on a Wednesday when a concerned neighbor alerted the police at 4:35 a.m. The neighbor reported finding an unconscious woman at 92 Chace Road in East Freetown, located south of Boston.

Upon investigation, authorities discovered Heidi Chace's lifeless body with severe facial injuries, blood scattered throughout the house, and a blood-soaked hammer with hair on it—a grim testament to the violence that occurred.

This gruesome incident transpired after the couple had indulged in drugs and alcohol with their neighbors. One of the neighbors later revealed their fear that something terrible would happen, though no one anticipated the tragic outcome. Witnesses disclosed that the suspect had physically attacked the victim during the gathering, leading to a heated altercation.

Later in the night, neighbors reported hearing shouting and objects being smashed inside the couple's home. A neighbor who checked on the situation was met with chilling words from Lucas: "Why are you cold, Heidi? I love you." He confessed to the killing, expressing that his life was now over.

Matthew Lucas was eventually found hiding in a shed less than a mile from the crime scene and was promptly taken into police custody.

It was revealed that he had been released from a commitment just two days before the fateful incident, and his defense attorney mentioned a history of mental health issues, including schizophrenia.
Matthew Lucas is scheduled to appear in court on October 20th for further legal proceedings.
