A man from Washington state, aged 76, was recently captured in Nevada after attempting to euthanize his own dog in the desert by claiming that the animal was unwell. The arrest of Wayne Johnson occurred in Laughlin, and he now faces a charge of felony willful injury of a dog, as reported by FOX5 Las Vegas.
The accusation against Johnson stems from an incident that took place on March 18th.
Allegedly, he stabbed his dog named Kea in the head and cut her throat, leaving her for dead near Nevada Telephone Cove and Red Hill Road. The discovery of the bleeding dog prompted a woman to call animal control for assistance, according to a report from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.
Kea, the wounded dog, was promptly taken to a veterinarian who sutured her wounds and discovered an identification microchip during the examination. It was through this microchip that animal control was able to reach out to Johnson, as he was confirmed to be the dog's owner, according to the report.
Johnson claimed that he sought to end Kea's life due to her old age, cancer, and blood in her urine.
In Johnson's view, it was preferable for the authorities to euthanize the dog, expressing regret over "wasting all that money on a dying dog."
Johnson further mentioned to the police that he thought he had successfully taken Kea's life and left her on their favorite hiking trail so that wild animals could consume her, in what he described as the natural "circle of life," as per the police report cited by KSNV-TV.
Contrary to Johnson's claims, the veterinarian found no evidence of any known diseases and observed that Kea was urinating normally, according to the police.
Unfortunately, despite initially surviving the surgery, Kea was ultimately put down several days later at the Animal Foundation, as reported by FOX5.
In another tragic incident that unfolded in Dallas, a dedicated Arlington Police Department officer has lost his life in a suspected hit-and-run collision on Thursday. See detailed story here
