Alleged Sexual Misconduct: Florida Teacher's Apparent Suicide Ends Case

A former high school teacher from Florida who was facing allegations of sex crimes with a student has died, according to authorities in Broward County.

On September 8, 54-year-old Charles Maglio, a math teacher at Wellington Community High School, was arrested on charges of unlawful sexual activity with a minor and offense against a student by an authority figure, as reported by the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office.

On October 4, a document was filed in Palm Beach County to drop the charges following his death. Initially, the cause of his death was unknown.

The Broward Medical Examiner's Office revealed that the cause of Mr. Maglio's death was an intraoral gunshot wound, and the manner was ruled as suicide, according to Miami-based ABC affiliate WPLG.

The investigation into Maglio's actions began in December 2022 after a then-16-year-old girl received a flower delivery at a restaurant, Tijuana Flats. The restaurant manager traced the sender's name and alerted the high school, leading to contact with the girl's grandmother.

The teenager allegedly contacted Maglio on the same night, warning him about a potential investigation. She claimed they had deleted all their text messages. When questioned by investigators, she expressed her love for him and her reluctance to see him in trouble.

According to the girl, she initially met Maglio at the start of the 2022-23 school year, seeking a mentor figure, but their relationship escalated. They moved their communication to Snapchat to avoid saving evidence, and they allegedly had multiple sexual encounters at Maglio's apartment in Greenacres. She even kept her belongings there.

Investigators claimed that Maglio provided rides to and from work and gifted her various items, including clothing, jewelry, and accessories. They often went to movies and restaurants together, despite their awareness that their relationship was considered wrong.

A calendar in Maglio's apartment reportedly counted down the days until the girl turned eighteen, indicating their desire to be more open with their relationship at that time.

A search warrant executed at Maglio's apartment revealed a receipt for a ring and women's clothing. However, Maglio's daughter stated that the clothes belonged to her from when she was younger and denied her father's involvement in a romantic relationship.

During a controlled phone call with law enforcement, Maglio professed his love for the girl and expressed a desire to see her when she turned eighteen, arguing that he didn't view himself as a predator.

Law enforcement claimed to have found Maglio's DNA on the student's underwear, leading to his subsequent arrest.

According to The Palm Beach Post, Maglio taught at Wellington Landings Middle School in 2016 before transferring to the high school in 2020. Prior to his teaching career in Palm Beach, he taught math at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County.
