A funeral worker found himself in hot water when he got arrested last week for an unusual and disturbing incident. The 41-year-old, Ryan Smith, was taken into custody on October 13, facing charges of burglary, criminal trespassing, and tampering with physical evidence. Notably, he was promptly let go from his job at an Omaha mortuary.
Smith's strange encounter began when he and a colleague were dispatched to collect the body of a deceased man who had passed away naturally at the Rock Creek Apartments. As they entered the apartment, Smith noticed something quite out of the ordinary – a life-sized doll.
The pair, working on behalf of Mid America First Call, a company that handles the removal, transportation, embalming, and cremation of bodies, continued with their task.
Later in the day, things took a bizarre turn when Smith allegedly made a peculiar call to the property manager. He claimed that the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office needed him to return to the apartment to collect the doll for a "biopsy."
The property manager, suspicious of this explanation, decided to investigate the situation when they heard strange noises coming from inside the apartment. To their astonishment, they found Smith engaged in a sexual act with the doll. The apartment was secured with a deadbolt and a chain, yet Smith was discovered in this compromising situation.
Following this discovery, Smith, with his disheveled clothing, exited the apartment and cautioned the manager that he would return with a warrant for the doll.
The manager promptly reported the bizarre incident to the police, expressing concerns that the funeral worker might return to break in and pilfer items from the apartment. When investigators arrived, they observed that several items inside the apartment had been moved since their earlier death investigation that day.
The Douglas County Crime Lab is currently processing fingerprints lifted from the items that were moved. Additionally, they plan to request DNA samples from the doll to further investigate the situation.
Justin Dalton, the owner of Mid America First Call, confirmed that Smith had been terminated from his job, even though the disturbing incident did not occur during working hours.
