In Arizona, a cherished K-9 serving with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department lost its life during a pursuit of armed robbery suspects.
Around 8 p.m. on Friday, deputies from the Rincon District and the K9 Unit of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department were investigating an armed robbery incident, as per the department's official statement.
In the course of the operation, the deputies dispatched their K9, named Kenzo, to track down one of the suspected culprits who had entered a fenced commercial yard. Unfortunately, during the pursuit, K-9 Kenzo ceased responding to commands from the handler, prompting the deputies to enter the yard. They discovered Kenzo lying unresponsive next to the suspect, suffering from severe injuries that ultimately proved fatal.
The injured K-9 was swiftly transported to a veterinary hospital, but despite the efforts, it succumbed to injuries that appeared to be from stab wounds. An upcoming necropsy is scheduled to ascertain the precise cause of the injuries.
Following an intensive investigation, authorities arrested a 32-year-old named Juan Tacho, who now faces multiple charges including armed robbery, aggravated robbery, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Another individual, Cody Bartlett, aged 35, was also apprehended, facing charges related to the armed robbery, aggravated robbery, and harming a service animal. Further charges are anticipated, as per law enforcement officials.
Both Tacho and Bartlett were taken to the Pima County Adult Detention Complex. Currently, it remains uncertain whether they have legal representation.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department expressed profound grief over the loss of K-9 Kenzo and highlighted the dangers faced by their deputies and their loyal K-9 partners who valiantly serve alongside them.
