A murder suspect who assaulted a cop and escaped from custody was finally nabbed after seven weeks on the run, according to Washington police.
Christopher Haynes, aged 30, was originally busted on a murder charge on September 6 by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force for the killing of Brent Hayward that happened on August 12. Haynes complained about his ankle hurting and was taken to George Washington University Hospital for treatment.
At around 3:38 p.m., while officers were switching Haynes' handcuffs at the hospital to cuff one hand to a gurney, he attacked the officer and made a run for it with one cuff still attached to his right wrist, as reported by the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department in a press release. Two officers gave chase, but Haynes managed to evade them, at least for a while.
Finally, on Thursday, the U.S. Marshal's Service tracked down Haynes on Iverson Street in Oxon Hill, Maryland, which is 11 miles from the hospital he escaped from. The authorities didn't disclose how they located him, according to the Washington Post.
Shelia Jackson, Hayward's mother, expressed her relief at her son being found. She told WTOP, "A weight has been lifted. It's a weight off me. It's a weight off my family. We were losing confidence in the federal government that they would catch him."
The FBI had offered a $10,000 reward for tips leading to Haynes' capture, and this was increased to $30,000 on September 13. It's uncertain whether anyone will claim the reward.
The press release expressed deep gratitude to the community members who assisted in providing information about Haynes' whereabouts.
Haynes now faces charges for murder and escape.
