According to authorities, a man from Pennsylvania, Ethan Nicholas Bastien, reportedly dialed 911 and claimed that the woman he was accused of shooting and killing, Sian Cartagena, had inflicted the gunshot wound herself.
On the morning of October 2, the Allentown Police Department responded to the call made by Bastien, where he alleged that Cartagena had shot herself in the head.
As per the police's press release, Cartagena was discovered unconscious on a mattress and was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries two days later. Bastien was apprehended the same day and initially faced attempted murder charges, which were later upgraded.
The ruling by the Lehigh County Coroner on Monday concluded that Cartagena's death was a result of homicide.
Subsequently, Bastien was charged with first-degree criminal homicide and is presently detained without bail at Lehigh County Jail. Public records indicate that he is awaiting a preliminary hearing and has been provided with a public defender.
Reports from The Express-Times highlighted that Cartagena, who had recently turned 18 in August, aspired to pursue a career in modeling and had a passion for writing poetry and music lyrics.
She also harbored ambitions of studying medicine in college. Survived by a brother and three sisters, her mother, Dolores Cartagena, expressed her profound grief on a GoFundMe page, emphasizing the need for proper arrangements to honor her daughter's memory.
