Florida Woman Arrested for Child Neglect Amidst Overdose Incident

A Florida woman faces child neglect charges following an incident where she overdosed in the same house as two children, with potential access to a syringe, as reported by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

Kandes Alderman, a 39-year-old woman, was taken into custody on two counts of child neglect without severe bodily harm. She was discovered unresponsive in her bedroom by deputies on Wednesday evening, according to an affidavit. A 7-year-old child called 911 to report the unconscious woman.

The children's relationship to Alderman is unclear, but she was identified as their caregiver and primary guardian, according to deputies.

Upon deputies' arrival at the Sumterville residence, they found Alderman in a state of unresponsiveness, characterized by snoring and irregular breathing. She was difficult to awaken and only regained consciousness after a deputy applied sternum rubs and assisted her out of bed.

Once awake, Alderman was taken outside and received medical treatment from Sumter Rescue Fire Officials. Inside her bedroom, a used syringe was discovered on her nightstand, visible to anyone present. A field test confirmed the presence of heroin. When questioned about the syringe, Alderman denied its use.

Deputies highlighted that the syringe was easily accessible to both children, emphasizing that Alderman had left them unsupervised without any other adults nearby for supervision and care.

Subsequently, she was transported to a local hospital but left without authorities' knowledge. A day later, Alderman contacted the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, leading to her arrest. She was then transferred to the Sumter County Detention Center on a $4,000 bond.
