Authorities reported the discovery of a deceased 22-year-old male at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, on Saturday morning.
The individual was found heavily armed, dressed in tactical clothing resembling law enforcement attire, according to an updated release by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office on Monday.
The circumstances surrounding the individual's death have led to an ongoing investigation, with the possibility of it being considered a suicide, as indicated by the Garfield County Coroner. Notably, the suspect had entered the park outside of operating hours, with no employees present at the scene.
Upon examination, law enforcement officials discovered the presence of several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) both on the suspect's person and in a vehicle associated with the suspect.
The timely intervention of the Grand Junction Bomb Squad successfully neutralized the devices, averting any potential harm to the public or the property.
The sheriff’s office reassured the community that the suspect's actions were confined to the premises of the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, affirming that there was no immediate threat to the public. Nevertheless, the thorough search of the suspect's residence in the Carbondale area aimed to ensure the safety of the community and ascertain the full extent of the suspect's intended criminal activities.
Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, authorities highlighted the potential for severe consequences had the suspect's plans materialized, acknowledging the dedicated efforts of law enforcement in preventing a possible large-scale tragedy.
Expressing gratitude for the collaborative efforts of various agencies in the investigation, the general manager of the park, Nancy Heard, extended her appreciation to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Department and other response teams, emphasizing the shared commitment to ensuring the park's continued safety.
The park's management underscored the existing security measures in place, including a comprehensive network of surveillance cameras, alarms, and reinforced physical barriers, all designed to uphold the safety of visitors and staff.
They reassured the public that the incident was isolated and unrelated to any operational areas or attractions within the park.
