House of Notorious Murdaugh Family Goes on Sale: A Peek Inside

The Murdaugh family's estate, known as Moselle in Islandton, South Carolina, is back on the market, offering potential buyers a unique opportunity.

On March 22, the 1,770-acre property, where the tragic fatal shootings of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh occurred in 2021, was sold for $3.9 million to Jeffrey Godley of Islandton and James Ayer of Ehrhardt, as reported by The Post and Courier.

Just a few weeks prior, on March 2, Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of killing his wife and youngest son and subsequently sentenced to two life terms in prison. Despite his conviction, the disgraced attorney, aged 55, maintains his innocence and is seeking a new trial for the murder.

The proceeds from the estate sale, which was in Maggie's name, were used to cover Murdaugh's legal expenses and compensate victims of a 2019 boat crash that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach, allegedly while Paul was driving, according to WSAV.

A portion of the proceeds also went to Alex's surviving son, Buster Murdaugh, and a settlement fund for victims of Alex's alleged financial crimes, which involved embezzling millions from his clients and others, as reported by The Post and Courier.

Now, it has been announced that Godley and Ayer have put the 4-bedroom, 4.5 bath, 5,275-square-foot house and 21 acres of the extensive property on the market for $1.95 million. The reason behind their decision to sell remains unclear.

Although attempts to reach Godley and Todd Crosby, the listing agent from the Crosby Land Company, have gone unanswered, according to PEOPLE.

The Moselle estate played a central role in the murder trial, as the bodies of Maggie and Paul were discovered on a part of the property near the dog kennels on the night of June 7, 2021. However, it's important to note that the sale of the house and 21 acres does not include the dog kennels, as reported by WSAV.

Potential buyers interested in viewing the property must have prior approval and schedule an appointment, according to the Crosby website. Notably, the home's contents were auctioned off in Georgia in March, so buyers are unlikely to find any Murdaugh family belongings in the house.

The auction included various items such as Buster's khaki chinos, Maggie's beloved bicycle, a fur she wore in photos, and the so-called "alibi couch" that Alex claimed he was napping on during the murders. The sale generated significant interest, with a $35 Yeti cup selling for $400 and turtle lamps fetching $5,000.

The proceeds from the auction went toward covering Murdaugh's legal expenses. Many items were later resold on eBay at significantly higher prices, including a crossbow supposedly taken from the Moselle property gunroom.

For those considering purchasing the house on the property, they can look forward to a picturesque landscape featuring open fields and a mature hardwood forest. The property offers privacy and tranquility, making it suitable for various uses, such as a family residence, equestrian activities, a hobby farm, or a weekend retreat.

The Moselle Estate House boasts an impressive oak-lined driveway leading to a classic and traditionally styled southern mansion. The property includes a recreational room on the main level, perfect for billiards, and custom gun cabinets.
