Mississippi Man, James Fulgham, Charged with Murder After Confessing to Double Homicide

A man from Mississippi faces murder charges after admitting to shooting and killing his girlfriend and her 8-year-old son, then setting fire to their trailer, according to the police.

James Fulgham, 31, confessed to the murder of Zina Williams, 43, and her son, Zacchesus. Firefighters discovered their lifeless bodies when they responded to a report of a fire on a Monday evening.

Sheriff Mike Lee of Scott County told PEOPLE that Fulgham fled the trailer in Williams' car and was apprehended the following day in Lauderdale County, which is one county over. Williams' car was found concealed in the woods behind Fulgham's residence.

Zacchesus sustained three gunshot wounds, while Zina was shot once in the head, according to Lee.

Fulgham faces charges of two counts of capital murder, arson, and auto theft. He is currently in custody at the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and has been denied bail. Whether he has legal representation remains unclear.

The case is still under investigation, but investigators believe that Zacchesus was shot first.

Sheriff Lee expressed the horror of the event, noting that this is the first murder in Scott County this year. He mentioned that such incidents are uncommon in their community and that the loss of a child has deeply affected the law enforcement personnel.

He added, "Hopefully we do have some answers for the victims' family." Zacchesus was a student at Forest Elementary School.
