In California, a 34-year-old woman was arrested for the alleged killing of her 4-year-old daughter, fatally stabbing the little girl in their apartment, where her father discovered the tragic scene.
Mina Nazari was taken into custody over the weekend and is facing a series of serious charges, including one count of murder with a dangerous weapon and one count of child abuse resulting in the death of Sana Akram, as revealed in court documents reviewed by Law&Crime.
According to the criminal complaint, prosecutors claim that Nazari willfully and with premeditation caused the child's death. The case stems from an incident at the Crown Ridge Apartments on Scenic Drive, where Modesto Police Department officers responded to an emergency call about a potential assault at approximately 12:48 p.m. on Saturday. Tragically, first responders found the child deceased, but her 10-year-old brother was found unharmed.
The Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office has also announced that Nazari allegedly attempted to kill her 10-year-old son, resulting in additional charges, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and permitting a child to suffer harm.
As of Wednesday evening, investigators had not disclosed any motive for the heartbreaking incident. It was reported that Nazari was born in Iran and came to the U.S. as a refugee. Community members and advocates expressed concerns about the stigma associated with seeking professional mental health assistance, especially in South Asian communities.
A family friend noted that Nazari had been grappling with depression and mental illness before the tragic events on Saturday. A GoFundMe page has been set up by a family friend to collect donations for the victim's funeral and memorial services.
Nazari is currently being held without bond, and a bond hearing is scheduled for October 24 in Stanislaus Superior Court.
