Parents Arrested in Alabama for Hiding Son's Body in Freezer

An Alabama couple found themselves in hot water over the weekend when they got arrested after the discovery of their 19-year-old son's badly decomposed body stashed in a freezer behind their old house. The parents, Michael Shane Halstead, 44, and Karen Tysinger Halstead, 43, were nabbed on Sunday and slapped with charges of abusing a corpse, as authorities revealed.

The scoop from Law&Crime includes a chat with Henry County Sheriff Eric Blankenship, who gave the lowdown on the arrests and hinted at the possibility of more charges down the line. "We're just getting started with this investigation, so there might be more charges, maybe even murder," he said.

According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, the fuzz was dispatched to a place on Bradford Drive after a concerned caller reported finding a deceased body on the property. The deputies arrived at the scene and stumbled upon a seriously decomposed body chilling inside an overturned freezer in the backyard. The victim is believed to be 19-year-old Logan Michael Halstead, according to preliminary findings.

Sheriff Blankenship had this to say, "This is a heart-wrenching situation, and we're committed to uncovering the truth." He assured that the investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as it unfolds.

Some hours later, the Halstead couple was tracked down in Jack, Alabama, about 50 miles west of their old haunt. They were brought back to Henry County, where detectives had a little chat with them before checking them into Henry County Jail.

As per reports from WDHN, authorities suspect that Logan Halstead's body had been chilling in the freezer since late August. The story gets more twisted when you learn that Michael and Karen Halstead had been renting the house but hightailed it without paying rent sometime after August 2023. The landlord who took over the property then stumbled upon the grim discovery while sprucing up the place.

Logan Halstead's remains were carted off to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, where a medical examiner is gearing up for an autopsy. The Headland Police Department, Dothan Police Department, and Alabama State Police all pitched in to help with the investigation.

The Halsteads are cooling their heels in custody without bond and are slated for their first court appearance on Monday afternoon. Authorities are putting the word out, urging anyone with info related to the case to get in touch with HCSO at (334) 585-3131.
