Teen Murderers Named for The First Time After Boy, 17, is Brutally Murdered in The Street

The identities of teenage killers have been revealed for the first time following a tragic incident involving the murder of a 17-year-old boy. In this heart-wrenching episode, Tafari Smith, who was 16 at the time, fatally stabbed Kyle Hackland, while other teenagers joined in on this brutal attack.

Kyle's murder was driven by a desire for revenge, as his assailants sought retribution for a prior incident. One of the suspects wrongfully blamed one of Kyle's friends after a drug deal gone awry, which had resulted in his friend being "set up."

Notably, Kyle had no connection to this incident.

On November 22 of 2022, tragedy struck as Kyle was walking alongside his friend on Southlea Road in Withington at approximately 11:30 a.m. The attackers, spotting him, launched their assault.

Smith, now 17, has been named after a successful application by the M.E.N. to lift the anonymity typically granted to juvenile offenders. Smith had previously been found guilty of murder.

Additionally, 18-year-olds Yousef Sesay and Lewis Ludford were also convicted of murder. Another teenager, 17-year-old Alfie Benson, was not involved in the attack itself but played a role as the driver of a stolen VW Golf, transporting the assailants to and from the scene.

Benson was found guilty of manslaughter.

The four teenagers have received their sentences. Smith, Sesay, and Ludford were detained at His Majesty's pleasure, which is akin to a life sentence for juveniles. Smith's minimum sentence is 19 years, while Sesay and Ludford will serve minimum terms of 22 and 21 years, respectively. Benson received a 12-year sentence.

During the sentencing, Judge Alan Conrad KC remarked on the cruelty of Kyle's life being abruptly and unjustly cut short, emphasizing that Kyle had done nothing to deserve his tragic fate.

The harrowing murder was captured on CCTV footage, which provided crucial evidence for the prosecution. The motive behind the murder was revenge, stemming from Kyle's association with a friend named James Todd, who was wrongly implicated in a drug-related robbery the day before the fatal incident.

The assailants, riding in the stolen VW Golf, encountered Kyle and Todd by chance while out drug dealing. Todd fled down an alleyway, leaving Kyle as the target of the attackers.

Kyle endured a senseless and brutal assault, suffering four stab wounds while Sesay shouted, "chef him, chef him." He was also subjected to punches and kicks. As Kyle lay wounded on the driveway of a residence, one of his attackers callously told him, "don't ever try to rob us again" before leaving him to perish.

During the trial, Smith admitted to stabbing Kyle in a state of panic, believing wrongly that Kyle was armed. Ludford, who confessed to manslaughter, claimed to have been close friends with Kyle as a child and stated that he only wished to engage in a fight with Kyle due to his anger.

Benson, who had no involvement in the attack and remained in the car throughout the incident, was found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter. Sesay did not testify during the trial.

It is important to note that James Todd had previously been sentenced to 13 months for possessing a bladed article during the incident. Smith, Sesay, and Ludford were all unanimously found guilty of murder following a trial that concluded in June.

In another development, a 20-year-old woman from Nevada found herself in handcuffs after admitting to meddling with her roommate and the roommate's 2-year-old child's water due to what she described as "petty arguments." See detailed story here.
