A tragic incident unfolded when a 13-year-old boy, allegedly, fatally stabbed his sleeping mother, who had just given birth two weeks prior. The teen dialed the police in Hialeah and reportedly confessed to the crime, as reported by Local 10, NBC Miami, and WSVN.
The victim was identified as Irina Garcia, aged 39. It's heart-wrenching to note that just a fortnight before her death, she welcomed a baby girl, her teen son's half-sister, who thankfully remained unharmed, according to various reports.
As per updates from WSVN, Local 10, and other sources, the teen is now facing second-degree murder charges. Whether he has secured legal representation is currently unclear.
A police spokesperson revealed that the suspect, whose identity is protected as he is charged as a minor, is an honor student at a middle school. Upon the arrival of the officers, he expressed remorse, as per Local 10. However, the motive behind this devastating act remains unknown.
Hialeah police spokesperson Eddie Rodriguez, speaking to NBC, stated, "We don't know, that's something that we're still trying to figure out. He did not say why he did this; all he did was call 911 and advise what he did."
In a touching gesture, a friend of Garcia initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support her husband and the newborn daughter.
"I was fortunate enough to know Irina for a year since moving to our apartment," wrote the organizer. "She was a person I can only describe as beautiful, both inside and out. She was always so warm and kind."
