After 10 Years in Prison, Olympic Runner Oscar Pistorius Has Been Granted Parole for 2013 Girlfriend's Murder

In a decision that has captured global attention, double-amputee Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius has been granted parole after serving 10 years in prison for the Valentine's Day 2013 killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius, who was at the peak of his fame and one of the world's most celebrated athletes at the time of the shooting, will be released from prison on January 5, 2024.

Department of Corrections spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed Pistorius' parole eligibility, stating that he has met the minimum requirement of serving half of his 13-year and five-month sentence.

Pistorius' initial conviction of culpable homicide, a charge comparable to manslaughter, was overturned on appeal, and he was subsequently convicted of murder.

Prior to his parole, Pistorius experienced a brief period of house arrest in 2015 while one of the numerous appeals in his case was being heard. However, he was returned to prison following the appeal's outcome.

The decision to grant parole to Pistorius has sparked mixed reactions, with some expressing relief that he will have the opportunity to rebuild his life, while others remain deeply affected by the tragic events that led to Steenkamp's death.

Regardless of one's stance on the parole decision, it is undeniable that Pistorius' story has left an indelible mark on the world stage.
