Authorities in Alabama made an arrest related to the disappearance of a man after discovering human remains in the suspect’s backyard, as detailed in official documents acquired by various news sources.
Ledarius Cash, 30, was taken into custody on Nov. 8, facing charges of abusing a corpse, as indicated in public jail records reviewed by PEOPLE. His plea status or legal representation remains undisclosed.
During a search at a Birmingham residence on Nov. 6, officers allegedly found skeletal remains, later confirmed to be human, within what seemed to be a recently deposited heap of soil in the backyard, as per a press release from the Birmingham Police Department.
The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the victim had suffered a gunshot wound, as outlined in the release.
Reports from AL.com and WBRC, citing court documents, suggest the remains were located behind Ledarius's home, who is also the son of the missing individual, Donald Cash, last seen on Sept. 26 in the Wylam community, according to a previous police statement.
Donald’s disappearance was considered critical, with the detective on the case uncovering details indicating his potential danger.
Though official identification is pending, the recovered remains are suspected to belong to Donald.
Documents obtained by AL.com allege that Cash “knowingly and willfully abused the corpse believed to be Donald Cash by burning and/or dismembering and/or improperly burying.”
Individuals with any information concerning the case are urged to reach out to the Birmingham Police Department’s Homicide Unit at (205)-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at (205)-254-7777.
