Behind Bars: James Ray Lane's 22-Year Sentence for Houston Airbnb Murder

A man from Texas has been sentenced to at least 11 years in prison for the murder of another man at a Houston Airbnb in June 2021, driven by jealousy.

James Ray Lane, 24, admitted to the murder of Gregory L. Moore on August 17. Following two-and-a-half months of pre-sentencing matters, Harris County Judge Natalia Cornelio sentenced Lane to 22 years in prison, as per court records obtained by Law&Crime.

According to Texas law on severe firearm offenses, Lane will be eligible for parole after serving half of his sentence. He received credit for 78 days spent in pretrial detention.

The incident occurred in the early hours of June 28, 2021, as documented in the criminal complaint obtained by Law&Crime. Moore and his three friends, who were visiting from New York and New Jersey, had just returned from a night out. One of the women he met at a club accompanied Moore back to the Airbnb, sparking Lane's jealousy.

Deputies reached the rental unit on Braewin Court at about 3:10 a.m. and discovered Moore injured in the doorway, per the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Despite being taken to a nearby hospital, Moore succumbed to his injuries. Lane, his girlfriend, and another man left the scene in a dark four-door car, according to reports from witnesses at the time, as reported by CBS affiliate KHOU.

Lane was apprehended on July 6, 2021. Details emerged during his initial bail hearing, revealing his use of Instagram to track the woman's movements that night.

Prosecutors later disclosed that he utilized the woman's cell phone location data to pinpoint her exact whereabouts. Lane eventually drove to the northern Houston suburb of Spring, where the violent incident unfolded.

Upon arrival, Lane physically assaulted both the woman and Moore before firing fatal shots. The case was characterized by significant delays due to various motions filed by the state, defense, and the court itself. Lane was released on bail following a significant reduction in mid-July 2021.

During the sentencing hearing, the prosecutor emphasized Lane's alleged state of mind during and after the crime. They highlighted the deliberate nature of the attack and Lane's lack of remorse or accountability, as witnessed by friends and family of Moore during their victim impact statements.
