A 42-year-old mother from Florida is facing serious legal trouble after an incident at a high school that occurred during morning drop-off last week. The woman, identified as Tarajayne Samuels-Catalan, has been charged with criminal offenses for her actions.
The incident unfolded at Port Charlotte High School on November 2, when Samuels-Catalan allegedly engaged in reckless behavior. Initially, she attempted to exit the school's parking lot the same way she had entered, against the guidance of a school staff member.
The staff member informed her that it was not permissible to exit in that direction due to buses arriving to unload students. This exchange left Samuels-Catalan agitated, prompting her to reverse her vehicle and turn it around, giving the impression that she was following the instructions to leave.
As this occurred, a school bus had begun to pull into the area but had to wait for Samuels-Catalan's vehicle to clear the path. Once the bus was able to proceed, the situation took a dangerous turn. Samuels-Catalan abruptly accelerated her vehicle in the direction of the staff member, revving the engine and driving at a high speed toward him.
Fearing for his safety, the staff member had no choice but to dive into nearby bushes to avoid being struck by the oncoming vehicle.
The staff member promptly reported the incident, providing the authorities with the suspect's license plate information. This led to a thorough investigation, with a witness and security footage corroborating the shocking incident.
When questioned by deputies, Samuels-Catalan defended her actions by stating her preference for exiting through the entry area to avoid speed bumps that could potentially damage her vehicle. She denied any intention of harming the school staff member with her vehicle.
Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell emphasized the importance of safety for students and staff, expressing relief that the staff member remained unharmed. He also encouraged Samuels-Catalan to reconsider the example she is setting for her child.
As a result of her actions, Samuels-Catalan now faces charges of aggravated assault on a public or private education employee and is currently detained without bond at the Charlotte County Jail.
