In a tragic turn of events, a convicted child molester has been sentenced to life plus five years behind bars for the kidnapping and murder of a beloved bartender. Demarcus Leonard Brinkley, 29, will serve the remainder of his life behind bars for the senseless crime that took the life of Mariam Abdulrab, 27.
The horrific incident occurred in the early morning hours of August 13, 2021, in Atlanta, Georgia. Brinkley abducted Abdulrab from her home after she finished her shift at the Revery VR Bar in Midtown Atlanta. Officers were later alerted to Abdulrab's lifeless body through a 911 call.
Following a high-speed chase with law enforcement, Brinkley was apprehended in Griffin, Georgia. He reportedly fled the scene in his dark blue Chevy Equinox SUV, causing a collision with another vehicle. Initial charges were traffic-related, according to WXIA.
Brinkley's criminal history revealed a prior conviction for child molestation, requiring him to register as a sex offender. Despite this, authorities failed to mandate a risk level assessment by the Georgia Sex Offender Registration Review Board.
Mariam Abdulrab was remembered for her kindness, love, and radiant spirit. Her father, Khalid Abdulrab, expressed his grief in an interview with Atlanta NBC affiliate WXIA on August 13, 2021, stating, "My daughter was the most peaceful and loving person. She did not deserve this."
The Revery VR Bar paid tribute to Abdulrab in a heartfelt statement posted on their Instagram page, expressing their deep sorrow for the loss of their beloved friend and family member. They highlighted Abdulrab's infectious positivity and the impact she had on everyone she encountered.
Grant Henry, the owner of Church bar, another establishment where Abdulrab worked, fondly remembered her in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, describing her as "a living jewel" and a beacon of light.
This heartbreaking case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of sexual violence and the importance of implementing effective risk assessment protocols for sex offenders.
