Los Angeles police detectives are still investigating the tragic death of model Maleesa Mooney, and they're facing a puzzling challenge from the recent autopsy report: it doesn't provide a clear cause of death.
Mooney, aged 31, was found bound, beaten, gagged, and placed inside a refrigerator in her downtown L.A. apartment. Her body was discovered during a welfare check on September 12.
In the autopsy report, which KTLA obtained last week, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner stated the cause of death as "homicidal violence" but couldn't pinpoint a specific injury that caused her death. David Marcinek, the lead detective on the Mooney case, expressed his surprise at this unusual cause of death listing.
The autopsy report noted that Mooney had suffered blunt force trauma to her head, torso, and arms, along with multiple lacerations and contusions. It also revealed the presence of cocaine and alcohol in her system. Although these blunt force injuries were generally not considered life-threatening on their own, the circumstances in which Mooney was found suggest she had been involved in a violent altercation before her death.
Detective Marcinek believes that Mooney likely succumbed to a combination of her injuries. Additionally, there was a discrepancy regarding Mooney's pregnancy, as her family initially claimed she was two months pregnant at the time of her death, but the autopsy report contradicted this information.
The investigation has gathered tips and reviewed security camera footage from Mooney's apartment on South Figueroa Street, but no arrest has been made yet. Detective Marcinek hasn't disclosed whether they've identified a person of interest but stated that this seems to be an isolated incident.
He encourages anyone with information to contact LAPD's Central Bureau Homicide unit at (213) 996-4150.
