A 64-year-old delivery man in Philadelphia was shot multiple times by several assailants moments after he dropped off groceries at a customer's home, with the gunmen then fleeing in his Jeep, according to Corporal Jasmine Reilly of the Philadelphia Police Department, as reported by PEOPLE.
The incident, which occurred around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, is currently being investigated as a carjacking and attempted robbery.
The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his chest, back, and torso and remains in critical condition as of Tuesday. No further details about the victim have been released, in line with the department's policy unless the victim succumbs to their injuries.
According to witness Phyllis Kelly, who had received the delivery, she had just reentered her home when the shots rang out. Another neighbor, James Thompson, reported hearing multiple gunshots and finding the delivery man lying on the ground near his residence. He promptly called 911.
The Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting disclosed that 1,492 individuals have been shot in the city so far this year, marking a 27 percent decrease from the previous year.
The motive behind the Sunday night shooting remains unclear, with the missing Jeep yet to be recovered. While the investigation is still in its early stages, the police have recovered a firearm and several spent shell casings from the crime scene. No arrests have been made as of early Tuesday.
