Tragic Shooting Claims Life Of Promising Basketball Star Carl-Hens Beliard at Salem State University

A promising basketball talent from Massachusetts, Carl-Hens Beliard, who played a pivotal role in securing his high school's state championship, was fatally shot just days before his debut match as a college freshman. Officials have arrested a suspect in connection with the incident, although the motive remains unclear. 

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when 18-year-old Beliard was found with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle near Salem State University.

According to authorities, there is no indication that the violence was random or that the SSU community is currently at risk. Missael Pena Canela, also 18, was apprehended on a murder charge, as announced by the Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker's office later that evening, reported the Boston Globe. 

Details regarding how Canela was identified as a suspect have not yet been disclosed.

Expressing his grief over the senseless loss, University President John Keenan conveyed his condolences to the victim's family and the wider community, emphasizing the tragedy's impact on the Salem State University campus. 

The untimely demise occurred amidst the bustling Halloween festivities, casting a shadow over the celebration and leaving the community in deep sorrow.

The incident took place near the university's athletics facilities, adding to the shock and disbelief within the community. In an emotional interview, Beliard's mother, Altagrace Beliard, reminisced about her son's passion for basketball, which had been ingrained in him since his early childhood. 

She highlighted his perseverance and determination, portraying him as a dedicated and ambitious young man who never gave up on his dreams.

Belliard, a prominent forward on the men's basketball team, played a significant role in Worcester's North High School's victory, leading the team to clinch the Division 1 State Championship. Acknowledged for his dedication and sportsmanship, he had previously shared his aspirations to pursue a career in exercise science and physical therapy. 

His coach, Al Pettway, fondly remembered Beliard's infectious smile and enthusiastic spirit, describing him as an exceptional student and an integral part of the school community.

Reflecting on the devastating loss, various public figures, including Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo, and Worcester Mayor Joe Petty, expressed their heartfelt condolences to Beliard's family and friends. 

Worcester Mayor Joe Petty, in particular, conveyed his profound sorrow and extended his sympathies to the grieving family, acknowledging the pain of losing a beloved child.
