A 10-year-old boy, Kendrick McDonald, was tragically shot and killed in Omaha, Nebraska, on Thanksgiving night.
His father, 47-year-old Will McDonald, has been arrested and is facing charges of criminal homicide, use of a weapon-gun, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
The shooting occurred just after 11:30 p.m. at the McDonald family home. Kendrick was transported to a nearby hospital but died from his injuries.
Investigators are still trying to determine the motive behind the shooting, but they believe it may have been triggered by a car alarm sounding near the home.
Omaha Police Captain Jeremy Christensen said that Will McDonald went outside to investigate the car alarm and for whatever reason, ended up shooting his son.
Christensen also said that a handgun was recovered at the scene of the shooting and that there were other children present in the house at the time.
Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said that prosecutors could file charges as early as Sunday. He also said that it does not appear that Will McDonald was justified in shooting his son.
This is a tragic and senseless loss of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kendrick's family during this difficult time.
