California Woman, Mayra Corina Chavez Sentenced to 15 Years to Life in Prison for Torturing Stepfather
Mayra Corina Chavez, a 33-year-old California woman, has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for torturing her 10-year-old stepdaughter. Chavez was found guilty of one felony count of torture, two felony counts of child abuse and endangerment, one felony enhancement of causing great bodily injury, and one count of misdemeanor simple assault.
Chavez's stepdaughter was subjected to months of horrific abuse, including being forced to kneel on raw rice and tin cans while zip-tied, being plunged face-first into a bathtub full of ice water while zip-tied, and being forced to bite into a habanero pepper that was then rubbed into her eyes and genitals.
The abuse came to light in August 2022, when the girl's father, Domingo Junior Flores, 33, took her to the hospital after she fell down the stairs. However, doctors quickly realized that the girl's injuries were far more serious than what Flores had claimed.
The girl was found to have a broken neck, bone sticking out of an unhealed sore, and bruises from head to toe. She weighed only 50 pounds at the time and was unresponsive.
Chavez was arrested and charged with the abuse. During her trial, witnesses testified about the horrific abuse that the girl had endured. Chavez was ultimately convicted of torturing her stepdaughter, as well as abusing one other stepdaughter and two of her biological children.
At Chavez's sentencing hearing, the girl's mother read a victim impact statement in which she described the devastating impact that the abuse had had on her daughter. She said that her daughter was "skin and bones, bruises and scabs" when she was found, and that she was "the personification of a whisper."
The girl's mother also said that her daughter has been through years of therapy and is now "thriving." She said that her daughter is "a survivor, a fighter, and an inspiration."
Chavez was sentenced to seven years to life in prison on the torture charge, with an additional seven-year sentencing enhancement. She was also sentenced to 10 months on the lesser child abuse charges.
Flores is awaiting trial on charges of one felony count of torture, two felony counts of child abuse and endangerment, one misdemeanor count of felony child abuse and endangerment, and one felony enhancement of causing great bodily injury.
