A beloved Wheaton man's life was tragically cut short Friday morning over a misunderstanding about pizza and a bar bill. Dexter Perkins, described as the heart and soul of his friend group, was fatally shot after an altercation at Rosie O'Reilly's.
The incident unfolded around 8:40 AM when a fight erupted between Perkins and three other men, allegedly sparked by a disagreement about paying for food and drinks.
The argument moved outside, prompting one of the unidentified men to fire warning shots into the air. Tragically, the conflict escalated further, leading Michael Freund, 49, to shoot Perkins twice – once in the torso and once in the face.
Freund surrendered to police without incident and now faces first-degree murder charges. He remains in custody with no confirmed attorney representation.
Authorities confirmed Perkins did not know Freund or the other individuals involved. DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick called the incident "horrible," particularly during the holiday season. State's Attorney Bob Berlin echoed his sentiment, expressing condolences to Perkins' family and condemning the "senseless act of violence."
Perkins, remembered as a devoted father of two and the life of the party, leaves a gaping hole in the lives of his family and friends. A GoFundMe page set up in his memory aims to support his daughters in the wake of this immense loss.
