Minnesota Man Indicted in Murder of Ex-Girlfriend After Release from Jail

Tragedy struck Minnesota as Danicka Bergeson, 33, was found murdered in her apartment just days after her ex-boyfriend, Matthew Brenneman, 39, was released from jail for previous assaults against her.
Brenneman was indicted on three counts: first-degree murder with a history of domestic abuse, second-degree murder during a felony, and second-degree murder while under a restraining order. He is currently in custody with bail set at $2 million and awaiting his next court appearance on December 18th.

Bergeson was discovered wrapped in blankets and a plastic bag, covered in injuries, indicating a violent attack. Her death was believed to have occurred at least a day prior to the discovery. Police found Brenneman inside the apartment, apparently attempting suicide by ingesting bleach.

Just eleven days before the murder, Brenneman was released from jail after pleading guilty to assaulting Bergeson. This plea deal followed a series of domestic violence incidents, including choking, threats, and physical assaults.

Bergeson's family expressed their long-held fear for her safety. "We dreaded this call," said her father, David Bergeson. "It felt inevitable with the repeated abuse."

This tragedy highlights the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the need for stronger support systems for victims. While Brenneman's prosecution is underway, it underscores the need for more comprehensive solutions to prevent future tragedies.
