No Charges for Officer Who Shot Unarmed Boy After 911 Call

In an alarming incident, a Mississippi police officer, Sgt. Greg Capers, who shot and injured an unarmed 11-year-old boy named Aderrien Murry during a response to a 911 call about a domestic violence situation in May, will not face charges, according to the state's Attorney General’s Office. The announcement followed a grand jury's decision in Sunflower County, stating no criminal conduct by Sgt. Capers. The incident took place on May 20, 2023, and the Attorney General's Office completed its review before presenting it to the grand jury.

Despite the grand jury's decision, Aderrien Murry's family plans to pursue justice through a federal civil lawsuit, as stated by their attorney, Carlos Moore. Moore emphasized that the family believes there are unanswered questions and that the shooting was unjustified.

Sgt. Capers, represented by attorney Michael Carr, expressed relief at being vindicated but acknowledged the trauma caused by the incident. Carr hopes for continued healing for both Sgt. Capers and the affected family.

Aderrien Murry recounted the terrifying experience in June, describing the fear he felt during the shooting. His mother, Nakala Murry, expressed shock at the incident, highlighting that a call for help led to her son's near-death experience.

The sequence of events began when Nakala asked Aderrien to call 911 during an argument at home. The police response, however, escalated the situation. When officers arrived, they forcefully entered, and Nakala followed their orders to exit the house. Aderrien, complying with instructions, emerged from his room with hands raised, only to be shot in the chest as he turned into the living room.

Despite his injuries, Aderrien ran toward his mother, bleeding from the gunshot wound. Nakala, panicked but resolute, provided immediate aid by applying pressure to the wound until medical help arrived. Aderrien was subsequently hospitalized with a collapsed lung, a lacerated liver, and fractured ribs.

The aftermath of the incident included panic attacks and flashbacks for Aderrien, who was eventually released from the hospital on May 24. The family faces ongoing challenges, and a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with medical expenses.

While the grand jury decision may have concluded the legal aspect, the family's pursuit of justice underscores the emotional toll and lingering questions surrounding this distressing event.
