Jealous Ex Poses as Delivery Driver, Fatally Shoots Girlfriend's New Boyfriend in Premeditated Attack
A 33-year-old man, Donovan Carter, is behind bars after allegedly orchestrating a chilling birthday surprise for his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend - a fatal one.
Last week, Carter drove over an hour to Marietta, Georgia, disguised as a delivery driver to lure the victim, 40-year-old Kenneth Cunningham, out of his apartment. Once outside, Carter allegedly gunned down Cunningham in a "preplanned, premeditated" attack.
On January 3rd, around 10:30 AM, officers responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex. Upon arrival, they found Cunningham, a resident of the building, lying lifeless outside with multiple gunshot wounds. Witnesses described seeing a "slender male, around six feet tall" fleeing the scene.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but a targeted attack against Cunningham. Hours later, after a multiagency manhunt, Carter was apprehended and charged with murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession during the commission of a crime.
Police believe Carter meticulously planned the attack, even donning a delivery driver uniform to deceive Cunningham. "The suspect intentionally drove over an hour to this location, premeditated this event, and posed as a delivery driver," Marietta Police Public Information Officer Chuck McPhilamy told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He then lured the victim out of his residence and proceeded to shoot him multiple times."
McPhilamy further revealed that Cunningham was expecting a package on the day of the shooting, making him even more susceptible to Carter's ruse. "He was expecting a package. He was being lured out of his own apartment under the guise of there is a package waiting for you," McPhilamy told Atlanta NBC affiliate WXIA. "And it was only then that the suspect confronted him and brutally shot him."
Thankfully, authorities confirmed Carter's ex-girlfriend was not involved in the heinous crime.
McPhilamy praised the collaborative effort of multiple law enforcement agencies in apprehending Carter. "Most of the time, we talk about a crime being solved because of one key piece," he told the Journal-Constitution. "You had six different agencies all working together to hold this individual accountable. And if it weren't for all of their efforts ... if this were solved, it certainly would not have been solved in the short amount of hours."
