Nearly four years later, the long-awaited trial over the disappearance and suspected murder of Jennifer Farber Dulos from Connecticut is underway. Michelle Troconis faces the trial's spotlight, accused of aiding her then-boyfriend, Fotis Dulos, in concealing the alleged homicide.
Fotis Dulos, Jennifer's estranged husband and the prime suspect, died by suicide prior to a bond hearing. Another individual implicated in the alleged murder conspiracy is Kent Mawhinney, a friend and lawyer associated with Dulos.
Despite extensive investigations, authorities have not located Jennifer Dulos' remains since her vanishing on May 24, 2019. Evidence discovered at her home indicated a violent crime occurred, suggesting her likely demise.
Suspicions heavily centered on Fotis Dulos amid a tumultuous divorce from Jennifer. She previously expressed concerns about his vengeful tendencies toward those he perceived wronged him. Jennifer once claimed he attempted to hit her with a vehicle.
Fotis Dulos vehemently denied involvement in his estranged wife's disappearance, even appearing on TV expressing worry. His defense contemplated a theory akin to the book "Gone Girl," suggesting Jennifer staged her vanishing to frame him for murder. Before his suicide, he maintained his innocence in a written note.
A critical piece of evidence in the prosecution's case is surveillance footage showing Fotis Dulos disposing of items throughout Hartford, allegedly discarding evidence linked to the case with Troconis' supposed assistance. Among the findings was a Vineyard Vines T-shirt stained with Jennifer's blood.
Troconis' defense lawyer, Jon Schoenhorn, argued against stringent bond conditions, emphasizing that the surveillance footage only portrayed her as a bystander in the disposal, not an active participant. He further contested the validity of the arrest warrant, accusing the police of misleading the judge.
The arrest warrant detailed inconsistencies in Troconis' statements across multiple interviews, highlighting discrepancies in her narrative about the events leading to Jennifer's disappearance.
Troconis' alleged conflicting statements involved her whereabouts and interactions with Dulos on the day in question, including a shift from initially claiming intimacy with him to later denying it and altering details about their activities.
During police questioning, Troconis mentioned buying cleaning supplies, but denied involvement in cleaning Jennifer. However, officers reported her acknowledging the presence of a stain and Dulos attributing it to spilled coffee, despite her disputing its scent.
Troconis responded emotionally when informed by police of Dulos' involvement in his wife's demise, expressing disdain for his actions.
In a statement translated by her defense and obtained by NBC Connecticut in May 2020, Troconis distanced herself from Fotis Dulos, expressing regret for trusting him.
