On November 26th, 2022, tragedy struck the Greenwich community when two teenagers, Charlie Bartolo and Kearne Solanke, lost their lives in a brutal attack fueled by gang rivalry. A group of five individuals, including the victims themselves, were allegedly involved in a pre-meditated plan to target members of a rival gang.
Charlie, riding his motorbike in Abbey Wood, was deliberately rammed by a car occupied by the group. Three individuals emerged from the car and attacked him with large knives, inflicting fatal wounds. While two others remained in the car, one reportedly armed with a knife, the others involved in the attack were identified as Kearne Solanke and two additional young men.
However, in a tragic twist, during the melee, Kearne himself suffered a fatal stab wound inflicted by one of his fellow attackers. The group then abandoned the car and Kearne, leaving him to die on the pavement in Thamesmead, just a mile away from the initial attack.
Extensive analysis of CCTV footage played a pivotal role in the investigation.
Detectives meticulously pieced together the sequence of events, identifying the individuals involved and their movements throughout the day. This evidence formed the basis of the prosecution's case, which argued that all five individuals were part of a joint plan to attack someone from the rival gang. Each member allegedly played a specific role, from driving the car to directly participating in the stabbing.
The convictions and subsequent sentencing of two individuals involved in the attack brought a measure of closure yet could not erase the pain and heartbreak experienced by the families of both Charlie and Kearne.
Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn, highlighting the devastating impact of knife crime, urged individuals to avoid carrying large blades due to the potential for unintended harm like the one suffered by Kearne.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gang violence and knife crime. It underscores the urgent need to address the root causes of these issues and actively promote peace and understanding within communities.
