Nursing student's death: Cause revealed, suspect arrested

Sadly, authorities revealed the cause of death for Laken Riley, the 22-year-old nursing student who went missing while jogging on a Georgia college campus. Laken was a student at Augusta University but had previously attended the University of Georgia, where she disappeared.

An investigation revealed Laken suffered blunt force trauma to the head, according to the coroner. A 26-year-old man named Jose Ibarra has been charged in connection with her death.

Laken was reported missing after not returning from her jog on Thursday. Later that day, her body was found unconscious with visible injuries in a wooded area near campus.

Officials have released disturbing details, accusing Ibarra of "seriously injuring her skull" and using an object to harm her. The affidavit also states he prevented her from calling for help and then dragged her body to a secluded area.

Ibarra was arrested on Friday and faces charges including murder, kidnapping, and assault. Police confirmed he's not a student, didn't know Laken, and likely acted alone. He entered the U.S. illegally in 2022 and is currently being held without bail.

As of now, it's unclear whether he has entered a plea, and his lawyers haven't responded to requests for comment.
