Police Just Identified One of The Victims in a Double Homicide Cold Case in Ledyard After 50-Years

More than fifty years after a tragic double shooting in Ledyard, Connecticut, law enforcement authorities have finally made a significant breakthrough in solving the mystery surrounding one of the victims.

The Connecticut State Police recently announced that they have successfully identified Linda Sue Childers from Kentucky as one of the victims killed in the chilling incident that occurred on December 31, 1970.

The case dates back to May 30, 1974, when police stumbled upon the skeletal remains of two individuals buried in a shallow grave in Ledyard.

It was evident that both victims had been subjected to a fatal gunshot wound.

However, while one victim's identity remained undisclosed, Linda Sue Childers had been using an alias, complicating the identification process.

Forensic examination revealed that the cause of death for both individuals was a gunshot to the head.

Subsequently, the perpetrators of this heinous act were apprehended, tried, and convicted, albeit both have since passed away.

For over half a century, the identity of one of the victims remained shrouded in mystery.

Despite efforts to solve the case, including the entry of case data into national and state DNA databases in 2011 and 2012 respectively, no breakthroughs were made, and the trail went cold.

The lack of viable leads left investigators grappling with the challenge of unraveling the mystery surrounding the unidentified victim.

In July 2022, a new ray of hope emerged as samples from the case were sent to Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy, a private company collaborating with the state.

Leveraging advancements in forensic technology and genetic genealogy, investigators reopened the case with renewed vigor.

Their tireless efforts paid off when they successfully traced the victim's sister in January, leading to a crucial breakthrough in the investigation.

The breakthrough came in the form of the victim's daughter, who provided a DNA sample that conclusively confirmed Linda Sue Childers' identity.

This pivotal moment not only brought closure to a decades-long mystery but also provided answers and solace to Linda's family.

The Connecticut State Police expressed their satisfaction in being able to bring clarity to the case and offer the family the closure they had long awaited.
