Husband Sentenced in Tragic Killing of Celebrated Young Doctor, Dr. Gwendoline Amsrala

A Nevada man will spend a minimum of a decade in prison after fatally stabbing his wife, who was out celebrating a significant achievement in her medical career.

Shiva Gummi, 33, attacked and killed 28-year-old Dr. Gwendoline Amsrala on April 15, 2023.

After stabbing himself in a failed suicide attempt, he called 911 to report the crime, according to KTNV, News3LV, and the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which cited an arrest document.

Dr. Amsrala had been celebrating with friends and colleagues, marking the completion of her first year of residency, before she was tragically killed at her Las Vegas home.

Gummi was sentenced to a prison term ranging from 10 to 25 years on May 23, weeks after he pleaded guilty on April 11, as reported by News3LV.

He entered an Alford plea to second-degree murder, meaning he did not admit guilt but acknowledged that the prosecution had sufficient evidence to secure a conviction, as per KTNV.

On the day of the incident, Gummi called 911 and informed the dispatcher that he had stabbed both himself and Amsrala, who was lying dead beside him.

"I want to die but I'm not dying," he reportedly said during the call, as noted by police and reported by KTNV and News3LV.

Amsrala's mother told police she was unaware of any domestic abuse in the marriage.

However, she mentioned that Gummi was upset about Amsrala spending the evening at the home of an intoxicated friend, as detailed by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Police reported that Amsrala returned home around 9 p.m., while Gummi, who was also out that night, came back at 11 p.m.

Described as a promising young doctor with a bright future, Dr. Amsrala was remembered fondly by her family and friends.

A GoFundMe page created in her honor emphasized her dedication to her future patients. "We always remember your after-school discipline, in organizing things, doing homework, and later meeting others or play," her aunt wrote in an online obituary. "We miss a young doctor in the family who had an infectious smile and the power to heal."

Gummi, who received 405 days of credit for time already served, was also ordered to pay a fee of $428, as reported by KTNV.
