A Michigan couple had recently ended their relationship when, according to prosecutors, Cinamon Charmaine Rigmaiden went to her ex-boyfriend’s house late on the night of Monday, June 3.
Allegedly, she poured an accelerant on the front porch and set the Detroit home on fire before fleeing the scene.
Prosecutors state that although Rigmaiden’s ex-boyfriend wasn’t at home, three other people were inside: his mother, Tina Dorrough, a 57-year-old man, and a 65-year-old woman.
Tragically, 53-year-old Dorrough died in the fire.
The other two victims, whose names haven’t been released, were quickly taken to the hospital for treatment, as per Wayne County prosecutors.
“Since when is the solution in the breakup of a relationship setting fire to an occupied house?” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement. “The alleged actions of the defendant in this case are beyond reprehensible.”
Maria Miller from the prosecutor’s office explained to PEOPLE that Dorrough was paralyzed on one side of her body, which made it difficult for her to escape the burning house.
The day after the fire, Livonia police arrested Rigmaiden.
She faces multiple charges: one count of felony murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of first-degree arson, and one count of third-degree arson.
On Friday, June 7, Rigmaiden was arraigned and taken into custody. She has pleaded not guilty, according to the prosecutor's office.
During a court appearance last week, her defense lawyer argued that Rigmaiden only intended to cause property damage and did not mean to harm anyone, as reported by Click on Detroit.
Rigmaiden is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause conference on June 14.
