Blaise Taylor, a former Tennessee Titans scout, is currently facing charges for the murder of his girlfriend, Jade Benning, and their unborn child.
Blaise Taylor, the son of ex-University of Tennessee assistant coach Trooper Taylor, was indicted in March on first-degree murder charges.
The charges come from the accusation that Blaise Taylor poisoned pregnant Jade Benning on February 25, 2023.
It's also said that Taylor was the father of her unborn baby.
At the court hearing in April, Nijaiha Jackson, Benning’s best friend, gave an emotional testimony.
Jackson said that Taylor left Benning when he found out she was pregnant.
According to Jackson, Taylor made it clear he did not want the baby or to be part of the baby's life, basically telling her she would be a single mom.
"He did not want the baby. He did not want to be a part of the baby’s life and was kind of ultimately telling her that she’d be a single mom," said Jackson.
Taylor's mother disagreed with this, saying that the couple was “considering all options.”
Even though Taylor initially left, the couple got back together and decided to try and fix their relationship.
Jackson remembered visiting Benning's house the night she was poisoned.
The couple appeared happy, but things took a sad turn when Jackson got a disturbing call from Benning.
"When she called me, she never said hello. She never said my name. She never acknowledged that I was on the phone,” Jackson recalled.
“She sounded very wavy and she started to say, ‘You did this to me. You put something in my drink. I knew my drink tasted funny.’”
A medical examiner testified that Benning had a very high amount of cocaine in her system, which ruled out recreational use as the cause of her death.
On the night of the incident, Taylor called 911, saying Benning seemed to be having an allergic reaction, and she was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center by ambulance.
When she arrived, her condition was critical.
Sadly, her unborn child died on February 27, and Benning herself passed away on March 6, 2023, without ever being able to talk to detectives.
The investigation, which involved homicide detectives, crime lab scientists, and medical experts, culminated in Taylor’s murder indictment.
Right now, the crucial evidence is the testimony from her friend about the strange taste of her drink.
Additionally, Detective Adam Reese, who investigated the case, mentioned, "It seemed like there had been some cleaning up done" at the scene.
He also said, "It's not something that happens suddenly to put drugs in someone's drink."
Additional testimony came from a colleague in the Titans’ scouting department.
The elder Taylor was present in the courtroom, supporting his son, who now faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.
