A 21-year-old woman was allegedly suffocated and killed by an illegal migrant on her birthday in Syracuse.
This young woman had fled abuse from her lover in Ecuador, as revealed by The Post.
Jhon Moises Chacaguasay-Ilbis, also 21 and from Ecuador, has been charged with the murder of Joselyn Jhoana Toaquiza.
According to the Post-Standard, he had arranged to meet her at his Airbnb in Syracuse on June 18.
Toaquiza crossed the southern border illegally into Lukeville, Arizona, on June 19, 2023, according to Homeland Security sources.
While in Border Patrol custody, she expressed fear of returning to Ecuador due to threats from a former romantic partner.
She was quickly released with a future court date and mentioned she was heading to Chicago.
In January 2023, just a few months before this incident, Chacaguasay-Ilbis also crossed the border illegally in El Paso, Texas.
He was released into the US because there was no space to hold him.
After the murder, Chacaguasay-Ilbis allegedly buried Toaquiza's body in a shallow grave in an upstate New York park.
Authorities believe the two had attended elementary school together in Ecuador.
It is unclear whether Chacaguasay-Ilbis was the lover Toaquiza was trying to escape when she came to the US.
Surveillance footage showed the pair entering the rental property just before 4:30 pm.
Later, Chacaguasay-Ilbis was allegedly seen carrying a limp Toaquiza with her arms and legs draped around him, before taking her body to a nearby park.
Afterward, he fled on a Greyhound bus back to his Spring Valley, Rockland County residence.
Toaquiza’s remains were found on Saturday after her family reported her missing.
Chacaguasay-Ilbis was charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse after turning himself in on Tuesday.
On Thursday, he appeared in Syracuse City Court, claiming he had no recollection of the alleged killing because he was too drunk.
