Remains of Woman Missing Since 2023 Found on Her Property; Husband Arrested

Last week, the remains of Elsie Wiggington, a Virginia mother missing since June 2023, were found.

This discovery resulted in her husband's arrest for her murder.

The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office found the human remains on Elsie Wiggington’s property.

The gruesome discovery was made while executing a second search warrant on August 14, 2024.

At that time, her husband, Frederick Wiggington Jr., was charged with concealing a dead body and held without bond.

However, the charge has been since been elevated to first-degree murder and firearm use during a felony.

This upgrade came after the medical examiner confirmed the remains were those of the 45-year-old missing woman.

Sheriff L.J. Ayers III reported that the remains were not located within the house on the property.

Deputies had conducted an initial search of the property last month.

Sheriff Ayers noted that he did not believe Elsie Wiggington was still alive during the initial search.

However, he did not explain why the search was delayed by over a year.

As previously covered by CrimeOnline, Wiggington’s family had reported her missing several times since June 2023.

The crime scene

Initially, officials in Amherst County suggested she had left voluntarily.

However, family members disagreed saying that Wiggington had recently expressed concerns for her safety.

They said she was supposed to meet a friend in Maryland but never arrived.

Wiggington was a director of nursing at a rehabilitation center before her unfortunate demise.

Her family said she was very committed to her job and would never leave without telling her kids and grandkids.

The investigation is still ongoing to uncover the details of Mrs. Wiggington’s sudden disappearance and murder.
